How Do Burglar Alarms Work?

How Do Burglar Alarms Work?

Burglar alarms work through a series of sensors forming a whole circuit around a building. If the circuit is broken, say by a window or door being opened, a countdown timer is triggered. If the correct code is not entered before the timer runs out, an alarm sounds.

Sometimes the alarm is just a loud noise to frighten off the burglar, but the effectiveness of these types of alarms in preventing a burglary or catching the offenders is limited.

The most effective types of burglar alarms are ones that are monitored by an alarm receiving centre.

In this article we will have a look at whether burglar alarms actually work or not.

Do Burglar Alarms Work?

Studies conducted through interviewing former burglars show that burglar alarms alone are only partially effective in protecting homes and businesses.

This article from The Guardian stated:

“most thieves were opportunists wandering the streets who would avoid difficult break-ins that were likely to attract attention.”

It goes on to state that burglar alarms in themselves were 13th on the list of the main deterrents for opportunist thieves, behind barking dogs and locked windows.

Not good news for the old burglar alarms. But this could be due to the fact that only 6% of people call the police when they hear a burglar alarm going off. A whopping 48% of people look out of the window, which is hardly going to deter a burglar!

How Can I Make My Burglar Alarm More Effective?

Well the answer to making your burglar alarm work harder is simple-get one that is monitored.

When a burglar alarm is monitored the chances of the police being called in time to interrupt the burglary are significantly higher.
Whether you are protecting a business or a home, burglar alarms work best if there is someone waiting for an alert 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year.

What is the point of having an alarm if everyone, including the burglar, just ignores it?

How does Burglar Alarm Monitoring Work?

Burglar alarm monitoring works by having staff on hand in an alarm receiving centre to alert someone if an intruder does manage to get into your building.

Mayfair Security has an alarm receiving centre, or ARC, in house, run by our sister company First County Monitoring.

Our ARC is assessed annually to ensure it complies with the National Security Industry (NSI) standard. It is certified as Gold, which is the highest standard.

This ensures we have safe and effective practices and adhere to British standards. Mayfair security is also accredited by ACS, Constructionline, and CHAS.

When your alarm is activated, we receive an alert in our monitoring centre. One of our trained and experienced staff will verify your alarm, and then call the named person on your escalation list.

Sometimes you might choose this to be a keyholder who lives close to the premises. The benefit of this is they can often be there faster than the police and can deal with false alarms, should they arise.

Or, you might prefer for us to ring the police straight away.

Either way, you have peace of mind that more is being done than people looking out of their windows for the source of the noise.

How Convenient Are Burglar Alarms?

Lots of people worry about unsightly wires in their home or business. Our wireless technology is just that; wireless. So you don’t need to worry about having lots of holes drilled in skirting boards and ugly wires trailing everywhere.

What's more, our alarms come with an app, so you can set and unset your alarm wherever you are. At work and need your neighbour to check on the dog? No problem! Just unset your alarm whilst youre at your desk and reset it once they leave.

Or, if you are on holiday and have arranged for someone to water your plants you don’t need to worry about your friend forgetting the code or forgetting to rest the alarm.

The app even alerts you if your alarm is activated, so you aren’t lying by the pool wondering if your house is still safe.
