Planning A Commercial Fire Alarm System

Planning A Commercial Fire Alarm System

When it comes to looking at Fire Alarm systems for commercial properties, unlike for domestic use, there are several factors that need to be considered. So, this week here at Mayfair Security will help give you some guidance on what to do when you are planning a commercial fire alarm system.

Could We Just Get A Domestic Fire Alarm?

Well, you could, but we most definitely would not recommend it. Commercial properties require much more thought and care if you want your property to be properly protected at all times. A commercial fire alarm system is going to be much more responsive and tailored to your needs.

What Type Of Commercial Property Do You Have?

Before getting a commercial fire alarm system, ask youself some basic questions. Is it one building or several buildings? What industry is the commercial property being used for?

Do you need more smoke detectors? Where will you put the alarms and fire extinguishers?

These are the sort of questions that need to be answered and you may not feel that you have enough knowledge or information in order that you can provide the right answers.

An established company like us here at Mayfair Security can answer all of these questions for you, of course.

So, if from the very early stages of planning a commercial fire alarm system, you would feel more comfortable handing this to reputable company like us then please do get in touch.

You can have a look at the professional services we provide at the fire alarms system page on our website here.

Also, at Mayfair Security, we also offer a 24 hour monitoring service which means your fire alarm is monitoried 24 hours a day 365 days a year.

Different Types Of Commercial Fire Alarm Systems

There are several different types of commercial fire safety alarms and most fall under the umbrella of the following:

Alarm Systems with public announcing equipment. Obviously not suitable for all commercial properties, but large and noisy premises like factories or industrial kitchens may find these are the best choice.

Wireless Fire Safety Alarms. The name speaks for itself really and these are most useful for commercial premises that are large or with several buildings in large area.

The most obvious benefit of a wireless system is that there isn’t any need for cabling to be carried out everywhere.

VESDAs (Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus) are alarm systems that are programmed to be always checking the air to check for any signs of smoke.

Unlike the usual smoke alarms that are activated by smoke, a VESDA is more pro-active. So, a busy restaurant or a multiplex cinema may wish to use this type of system.

Along With Great Fire Alarm Systems Comes Great Responsibility

Unlike a domestic fire alarm, there are several rules and regulations for commercial fire alarm systems.

For England and Wales, fire regulations for commercial properties are contained within The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

If you have trouble sleeping or don’t like talking to your family or friends then we have linked to that particular piece of legislation in the sentence above this one.

To make it a little easier to understand, we will highlight the main requirements for you below.

As we mentioned in the sub heading there is more responsibility involved in commercial fire alarm systems and every commercial property needs to have at least one ‘responsible person’.

For example, in smaller commercial properties this could be the owner, the landlord or Manager.

Some larger commercial properties may already have a facilities or health and safety manager and this would logically fall under their remit.

Obviously, given the subject matter, a lot of care should be taken before making this person ‘responsible’.

Some of the duties that need to be carried out include:

Fire risk assessments need to be regularly undertaken. The uk gov.uk website actually has an easy to understand fire risk assessment guide, so if you’re not sure where to start then that’s a good place to try first.

If any fire risks have been identified then the responsible person has to let management and staff know what the risks are
The creation and maintenance of any fire safety plans.

Most commercial properties will already have these in place so it should be a case of making sure they are up to date.

Carry out any fire safety training for all employees and create fire safety information for staff and for visitors and the general public.
Fire extinguishers.

Commercial properties are required, by law, to have the correct fire safety equipment. Along with fire extinguishers, some commercial properties may need to have a sprinkler system or fire hoses.

The uk.gov website we linked to earlier is a good starting point if you’re not sure what you will need and of course you can call us here at Mayfair Security for advice anytime!

Fire Safety Signs For Commercial Properties

Commercial properties and businesses are required by law to have at least two, clearly visible, fire safety signs.

One is a Fire Action Notice that lets anyone in a commercial property know what to do in the event of a suspected fire.

The other is a Fire Extinguisher ID Sign. This is the sign that describes the different types of fire extinguishers and whereabouts they are located.

Both of these signs are usually located where there is the most footfall. So, they are often seen in reception areas or in the entrance way of shops.
